Upon his return to Hawaiʻi, he partnered with songwriter Robert Beaumont to form the group Olomana. It was the first time he had ever met anyone writing songs of Hawaiʻi. Santos remembers being associated with the Kahaluʻu Heʻeia Ecumenical Youth Project and its leader Randy Kalahiki who introduced him to songwriter Liko Martin who co-wrote the song “Nanakuli Blues,” also known as Waimanalo Blues. “I’m like the child raised by the community.” “The song has a great deal to do with me, my early days in Kāneʻohe and Kahaluʻu,” he said. They helped forge the sound of 70s Hawaiian music, with laid-back contemporary rock that voiced the feelings of an entire generation in Hawai‘i. Henry Kapono became the wildly popular phenomenon Cecilio & Kapono (aka C&K) with Cecilio Rodriguez. Today he is one of Hawai'i's premier singer-songwriters, arrangers, composers and masters of the Hawaiian slack key guitar. Keola Beamer’s contributions to slack key guitar during the 1970s began to spark public interest in kī-hō‘alu, launching a statewide revival of the tradition, and his 1978 release, Honolulu City Lights, is the largest selling recording in the history of Hawaiian music. They have continued to lead the way for over 4 decades. Each became an icon in the 1970s, both at the creative forefront as Hawaiian music reinvented itself.
